Opportunity for Apprentices:
- Applications are taken Monday and Wednesday from 7:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m., and from 1:00 p.m. until 2:00 p.m.
- THIS IS NOT AN IMMEDIATE JOB OPPORTUNITY. Applicants are brought into the Apprenticeship program "as needed". The number of applicants brought in depends on the work available at the time.
- The Arizona Carpenters J.A.T.C. operates under The Drug Free Work Place Program.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Applicants to be accepted for apprenticeship, must
be of good moral character and meet the following requirements:
- A high school diploma or GED is not required for admission into the apprenticeship program.
- Applicants shall be physically fit for work of the craft, with due regard to aptitude and personal characteristics.
- Applicants shall not be less than eighteen (18) years of age.
- Applicants must be filled out at the union hall office.
- Applicants MUST have reliable TRANSPORTATION. That means something other than the bus system or a bicycle.
- All applicants must have their Social Security Card, a valid Drivers License and/or Picture Identification and Birth Certificate or U.S. Work Permit.
- Applicants must have a sufficient educational understanding to take related instruction training classes, understanding safety regulations, and follow written and oral instruction.
- Applicants must have an oral interview with a business agent.
Procedure for Indenture of Pre-Apprentices and Apprentice Applicants:
- Each applicant seeking admission into the program shall file a written application on a form furnished by the State Committee. Upon qualifying, each applicant is placed on a list with other qualified applicants.
- The applicant shall notify the union hall in writing of any changes in their address or phone number given on their application form.
- When work is available, the business agent shall call the eligible applicants
on the list until the position is filled. In order to be sent out to work, the applicant
shall have the following minimum tool requirements:
- Carpenter Nail Bag
- 20 oz. Nail Hammer
- Work Boots
- Flat Bar
- 25 ft. Steel Tape
- The applicant (apprentice or pre-apprentice) MUST wear proper work cloths on the job. NO TANK TOPS, SHORTS or TENNIS SHOES will be allowed! If you show up on the job site with improper attire you will be sent home.
- Permit Fee (Paid to the Local Union)
Term of Pre-Apprenticeship:
The term of pre-apprenticeship shall be a maximum of six (6) months. The pay scale for
a pre-apprentice is $10.00 per hour at this time. The pre-apprentice will be advanced into the
regular apprenticeship program at the request of the employer at any time during this (6) month period.
Term of Apprenticeship:
The term of apprenticeship shall be approximately four (4) years, during which time the
apprentice shall participate in an approved schedule of work experience for a minimum 6,000
hours and shall be required to attend related instruction classes until all the required tasks
are completed. The term of apprenticeship shall be divided into eight (8) 750-hour periods. The
pay scale will be advanced for each period of apprenticeship after required procedures are completed.

Upon qualifying, each applicant is placed on a list with other qualified applicants based upon points received during evaluation process.
- The applicant shall notify the union hall in writing of any changes in their address or phone number given on their application form. Applicants are required to notify the union hall at least once a month if they are still interested in the program. If notice is not received monthly, we will assume that they are no longer interested in the program and their application will be placed in an inactive status.
- When work is available, the business agent shall call the eligible
applicants on the list until the position is filled. In order to be sent
out to work, the applicant shall have the following minimum tool requirements:
- Utility Knife
- Lather Hatchet or Drywall Hammer (Ax)
- 16’ to 25’ Tape
- Two (2) Grease or Felt Pencils
- Tin Snips – Aviation
- Hard Pencils
- Work Boots
- 8” Nippers

The Apprenticeship Program consists of a minimum of 6,000 hours of
on-the-job training and a minimum of 576 hours of related instruction.
Related instruction classes are provided at the Training Center two (2)
Saturdays a month from 8:00 AM until 4:30 PM. You will receive college credit for
your related instruction through Gateway Community College.
The Millwright Apprenticeship is a statewide training program, and
employment may occur anywhere in the state, regardless of your current
residence. Therefore, it is a prerequisite that you have good, reliable
transportation and that you be willing to travel.
When you are placed in the program, you will need the following tools:
- Combination End Wrenches: 5/16" - 3/4"
- 1/2" Drive Sockets 3/8" - 3/4"
- 1/2" Drive Ratchet
- Channel Lock Pliers
- 2 Slot Screwdrivers
- 1 Phillips Screwdriver
- 6" Steel Rule (Graduated in 1/64")
- 16 oz Ball Peen Hammer
- 12" Adjustable Wrench
- Scribe (With magnet)
- 16' or 25' Steel Tape Measure
- Tool Box
All of the above tools do not necessarily have to be new. However, they must be of first quality, in good condition, and American made. You will be required to have additional tools as you progress through the program. A list of additional tools will be given to you at the proper time.
