Back to TopORIENTATION / SAFETY  (40 Hours)

This course provides an overview of the carpentry profession, tools of the trade, and jobsite safety. Discussion topics will include the history of the trade, apprenticeship responsibilities, and hiring-hall practices, and measurements. Successful students will receive OSHA 10 and Powder Actuated Tool certification cards. Qualified candidates will be issued a UBC Powered industrial lift truck operator’s card.

Back to Top HEALTH & SAFETY CERTIFICATIONS  (40 Hours)

This course covers the safe and appropriate use of scaffolds, aerial lift equipment, and emergency response procedures. Successful students will receive UBC Scaffold Erector and Aerial Lift Operator qualification cards. First Aid and CPR certification will be issued upon successful completion of the American Red Cross training provided.

This course introduces the basic principles and conventions associated with architectural print interpretation. Print characteristics, drawing methods, and standard graphic representations are explained and thoroughly discussed. Students will review plans and apply the visualization techniques presented in the training.

This hands-on course is designed to allow the students to install strip and plank hardwood flooring in the most basic applications. Floor preparation, moisture content and fastening techniques are covered.

This creative course allows the student to design patterns and install parquet flooring. Basic geometry and drafting skills will be covered. Proper preparation, adhesion and fastening techniques will also be covered.

New products are constantly being introduced into the industry. In this course the many types of engineered flooring and their installation are covered.

Borders and accents are an attractive way to dress up any floor installation. In this course the use of different colors and textures of flooring to produce beautiful borders and accents is taught.

This course is designed to allow the students to install flooring diagonally, the most typically used. They will also learn the importance of taking and laying out tedious measurements when they install flooring in the Herringbone pattern.

This free form class allows the students to address the creative side of their trade. Students are encouraged to design and build their "masterpiece".

Inlays play an important role in customizing wood floor systems. Building and using templates for cutting and routing inlays and medallions are covered in this course.

Back to Top STAIR TREAD & TRIM TREATMENTS  (40 Hours)

Stairs and moldings can be quite tricky. In this course the students will learn the proper process in covering stairs with hardwood flooring. Nosing and transition strips are also covered.

Abrading is a complex process that is the most important steps in producing a beautiful, long lasting finish. Power sanders and scrapers are taught in this class.

This exploratory course covers all aspects of finishing and refinishing wood floor systems including the proper procedures for identifying materials, repairs, grain filling, staining, painting and topcoats incorporating all application methods. Applicable city, state, and federal codes along with the proper health and safety considerations are also emphasized.
