The Carpenters Apprenticeship Program is a four - (4) year apprenticeship program approved by the State of Utah. Apprentices receive on the job training (through Employers signatory to the Union) and related and supplemental instruction (through training centers) throughout the term of the program. Upon completion of the minimum requirements of the program a person is promoted to the classification of a Journeyman with a trade certificate. Upon successful completion, each person will receive a certificate from the State of Utah and from the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America.

In order to indenture into the apprenticeship program (become an apprentice) a person must meet the following requirements:

  1. Be at least seventeen (17) years of age (no upper limit)
  2. Be able to do the work of the trade
  3. Have transportation or a way to get to the job site
  4. Secure a job with a contractor signatory to the Master Labor Agreement


Once a person has found a job with a Union Contractor, a Letter of Subscription must be filled out by the Employer. After the Employer has completed the Letter of Subscription, it can be taken to any one of the Local Unions listed. At the Local Union, you will fill out paperwork to complete your indenture into the apprenticeship program. At this time, you will also apply for membership into the Carpenters Union.

The following documents must be submitted upon filling out the paperwork at the union:

  1. Driver’s license or birth certificate
  2. Social Security Card or Immigration Registration Card

The applicant will be issued a Letter of Subscription, which must be signed by a Union Contractor and returned to a Carpenters Local Union closest to your home. The Letter of Subscription will be the ONLY form of indenture.

The applicant will sign an Apprentice Agreement and will receive a copy of the program Rules and Regulations.

The apprentice with previous work or school experience in the Carpenter Trade must furnish proof (letter from a previous contractor or school transcripts).

GENERAL PROGRAM INFORMATION
The apprentice will furnish his or her own tools. The apprentice will be scheduled to school 3 months after he/she has indentured into the program. Each class is for one week (1), forty hours (40) every three months. The Apprentice will be required to purchase books relating to training. The apprentice must verify completion of a Red Cross / First Aid Multimedia course within one year from the date of indenture into the program. The Apprenticeship Training Program for Carpenters is a four (4) year program. The first period Apprentice wage rate is 40% of journeyman scale. The program is approved for on-the-job training benefits for veterans who qualify.

This program DOES NOT provide for summer or part time employment.

Written applications shall be received at the following location, Monday through Friday, excluding holidays, during regular business hours.

Upon making application for entry into the program, an apprentice shall be issued a Letter of Subscription to be signed by any solicited, approved contractor who may be interested in hiring the applicant. Completed Letters of Subscription are to be returned to the Cabinet Makers JATC office, at the above address. Upon making application or indenture, the apprentice shall receive a copy of the program rules and regulations. The apprentice applicant with previous work or school experience in the trade must furnish proof (letter from previous contractors or school transcript) at the time of indenture. The Letter of Subscription shall be the only recognized form of indenture.

GENERAL PROGRAM INFORMATION
Upon indenture into the program, each apprentice shall be referred to Cabinet Makers, Millmen and Industrial Carpenters Local Union 721 for membership.

Apprentices shall furnish their own tools. A tool list will be provided. Apprentices shall register in and attend day time training classes of related and supplemental instruction in addition to on-the-job training. Each class meets for one (1) week every three months. Apprentices shall purchase their own books for each period of apprenticeship. Apprentices shall verify the completion of a Red Cross/First Aid, Multi-media course within one (1) year of their indenture into the program. The current first period rate shall be 45% of the Journeyman scale. The Apprenticeship Program is a four (4) year program divided into eight (8) six month training periods and each apprentice shall be required to complete 8,000 on-the-job training hours. Each period of advancement shall be made by meeting the requirements of passing each period of related and supplemental classroom instruction and accumulating the necessary on-the-job training hours. Employment within the trade depends upon the availability of work in the industry and willingness to work. This program is approved for eligible veterans for on-the-job training benefits (not school). This program does not provide for summer or part time employment.

The apprenticeship and training for a Millwright apprentice is four (4) years. The first period apprentice rate is 60% of Journeyman scale. The program does not provide for summer or part-time employment.

An apprentice applicant must be at least seventeen (17) years of age. There is no upper age limit. All applicants will be required to complete a written application when seeking entry into the program. Written applications will be received at the following location during normal business hours Monday through Friday, excluding holidays.

Upon indenture, each apprentice shall be required to sign an apprentice agreement. If the applicant is seventeen (17) years of age, he/she must have a parent or guardian sign the agreement also. Upon indenture, each apprentice shall be referred to the Cabinet Makers, Millmen and Industrial Carpenters Local Union 721 for membership. Upon indenture into the program, the apprentice shall receive a copy of the rules and regulations. An apprentice applicant with previous experience in the trade or school experience must furnish proof (letters from previous contractor or school transcripts) at the time of indenture. Each apprentice shall be required to register in and attend daytime training classes as scheduled, in addition to on-the-job training. Each apprentice shall furnish their own tools. Each apprentice shall have reliable transportation to school and work. The Floor Worker Apprenticeship program is a three-year program.
